The Allied Health is within the Heritage Precinct of the Lot Fourteen development, which includes the adaptive re-use of heritage buildings of the former Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) site.

The Allied Health Building was the former physiotherapy department building within the RAH. It is a 1920’s red brick building split over 5 levels including a basement level. The project consisted of a full base building upgrade and integrated fitout to make it into a sustainable, vibrant professional space and innovation hub for Lot Fourteen.

The concept behind the Allied Health Building was to restore the original beauty and ornate features of this State Heritage Listed building whilst maintaining a ‘light touch’ to the heritage features. Opening up the building by removing all of the hospital treatments and rooms allowed for much of the original building elements and features to be exposed, such as internal brick walls, high ceilings and full height steel windows.

Exposing the thermal mass of the structure has been able to provide a buffer to peak summer loads, with the resultant passive cooling effect, improving thermal comfort and reducing the need for air conditioning. Opening up the interior has also improved natural daylight and providing open space intended for social and business collaboration. Through construction, heavy emphasis was placed on low emission materials and procurement of materials with sustainability attributes and supply chain.

dsquared provided sustainability and Green Star advice from early design development, including building performance simulation, developing sustainability targets and providing sustainable material reviews. In April 2020, the Allied Health Building was certified 6 Star Green Star As Built under the Green Star Design & As-Built v1.2 rating tool, demonstrating “World Leadership” in ecologically sustainable design.
