MedSTAR is SA Ambulance Service’s unique 24-hour emergency medical retrieval service.
It provides South Australians with the highest level of emergency medical patient care, treatment and transport from any location in the State to the most appropriate medical facility. In 2016-17, SAAS responded to a total of 2762 retrieval incidents.
In January 2018, the SA Ambulance Services (SAAS) new Rescue Retrieval & Aviation Services (RRAS) facility was opened within the Adelaide Airport precinct. The new facility enabled the re-location of the SAAS Medical Retrieval Team from its current locations at Adelaide Airport into a purpose-built retrieval base adjacent to airside access to the helicopter lease holder, with an expectation to save lives by cutting up to 10 minutes off critical retrieval times. The $12M state-of-the-art base aims to improve response times for gravely ill and injured South Australians.
The new facility includes a dedicated hangar with a car crash simulator and helicopter airframe to allow world-class simulation training for paramedics, doctors and nurses.
The building was designed to achieve a 5 Star Green Star equivalent standard, and was eventually rated at 5 Stars using the SA Health IGRAT Tool.
